Joanne Wickenburg, Astrologer
Revised Courses
What is astrology? It is a study that compares the movement of celestial bodies to life on our planet. Just as the earth moving around the sun in its yearly trek determines the seasons of our year, astrologers study the many celestial cycles that influence our lives. From the perspective of human potentiality, astrologers compare the "map" of the sky as it was at the moment of birth to an individual's life and evolution. That map is called a horoscope.
"As Above, So Below"
In the great universities of renaissance Europe astrology was held in high esteem. Its concepts and symbols are intertwined throughout philosophy, art, literature, theology, and medicine.
Astrology did not die when it ceased being part of the academic experience after the "Age of Enlightenment", however the quality of understanding suffered greatly. Because of its departure from the academic setting, much of the early astrological literature has never been translated.
By the 20th Century a large part of society associated astrology with parlor-room entertainment, which led to what we now call "sun-sign" astrology. Those who wanted to seriously learn about this age-old system did so in private or in small group environments. Because of its isolation from the rest of society and its schools, the thread that connects astrology to other subjects has almost been broken.
Today's astrologers are trying to change that. Professional Organizations such as NCGR, ISAR, AFAN and others are working to elevate the image of astrology. Sophisticated software is now available to assist in research. Kepler College of Astrological Arts and Sciences represents another major step forward for astrology as it begins the process of bringing it back into the academic experience. As one of the Founding Board Members of Kepler College, it has been my privilege and honor to play a role in this historic undertaking.
